Hunting and Fishing Clothes for Women

Women of All Sizes Can Purchase Gear that Fits

Dec 19, 2008 Brenda Layman

More and more clothing manufacturers are becoming aware of the special needs of women hunters and anglers. Here are a few shopping tips.

Women who hunt and fish want apparel that will stand up to the same demands that men’s clothing takes. In addition, women’s clothing must be properly proportioned for the female body and designed to keep women warm while allowing for free movement while climbing or casting. This is a tall order, but more and more gear manufacturers are making the grade.

Women’s Clothing Has Different Proportions

Women’s sporting apparel isn’t just smaller than men’s. The designs must be cut to allow for larger hips and bust, while not being too full in the waist or wide across the back and shoulders. Too little material results in garments that bind, while too much fabric bunches awkwardly and impedes shooting and casting.

Hunting Clothing for Women

In the December 2008 / January 2009 issue of Woman Hunter, Nancy Jo Adams presents a thorough review of several manufacturers’ hunting clothes for women. Adams concludes that “most women hunters should be able to find hunting clothes that are functional, affordable, and which fit properly!” Her review includes products from SHE Outdoor Apparel, Medalist, Prois Hunting Apparel, Gamehide, Raven Wear, Scentlok, Filson, Cabela’s, Mossy Oak, Bass Pro, Foxy Huntress, Trailfeathers, and Outhere Smartwear, Scent Blocker, and High Maintenance Camo. Although not included in Adams’ review, Redhead and Orvis also offer gear just for women.

Fishing Clothing for Women

Clothing for women anglers is also becoming easier to find. Nylon pants with zip-off legs, such as Cabela’s River Guide 2-in-1 Pants, are indispensable, and the fit is excellent, hugging the waist yet allowing plenty of room in the hips and thighs. Waders sized just for women are a must, as those designed for men and boys simply will not accommodate a woman’s hips. Properly sized wading boots are also essential. Boots made for men and boys are designed to fit a wider, differently proportioned foot. Sure footing is required when climbing and wading, so women need well-fitting boots. Cabela’s, Orvis, Bass Pro, and Redhead are a few manufacturers who offer high-quality wading boots made specifically for women.

Heavy-Duty Gloves for Small Hands Are Hard to Find

Finding proper gloves for the hunter or angler with small, delicate hands is no easy task. Some children’s gloves are well-constructed and sturdy, but the fingers are too short to be comfortable for an adult woman. Most women’s gloves are designed to look pretty, not to take rugged use in outdoor conditions. In addition, women’s gloves may still be too large for very petite hands. Cabela’s Kid’s Gore-Tex Pinnacle Gloves are not a bad choice, providing excellent insulation and durability. However, the lining of these gloves is not connected to the inside finger tips, and may pull out or bunch when the gloves are removed.

Gloves for Grabbing Fish Prevent Bloody Knuckles

The perfect choice for grabbing big, bad fish is a pair of Toysmith Kid’s Gloves. These are real work gloves, with heavy canvas backs and leather palms and finger tips, and they come in children’s sizes small, medium, and large. Medium fits a woman who wears extra-small women’s gloves, or about a size four.

Women Can Find Comfortable, Durable Gear

As more and more women discover the fun and challenge of hunting and fishing, manufacturers are responding with a wider range of appropriate clothing to meet their needs. It may require a bit more shopping time, but the woman hunter or angler can find great clothes, boots, and gloves that fit properly and stand up to hard use in the field or on the water.

I was truly amazed at the number of companies that actually have started manufacturing women's hunting clothes. While I was doing my research for the article, there were new companies introducing their lines; Prois and TrailFeathers were two of those companies. Shortly after the article went to print, Rocky announced their new line of women's hunting apparel.

I hope you pick up a copy of the April/May editon of Woman Hunter Magazine when I bring to you an article on Women's hunting boots.
